Online gaming is regulated in Tasmania by the Gaming Control Act of 1993. The act discussed gaming in general and was silent on the matter of online gaming until it was amended on December 22, 1999. The amendment legalized and provided a licensing system for several categories of online gaming including fixed-odds wagering, sports betting, simulated games, and lotteries. On November 24, 2005, amidst controversy, the act was amended to permit betting exchanges. The application fee for a license is AUD $31,500. Annual taxes vary depending on the type of gaming operation.
